L'Oreal Colour Trophy Semi Finalist 2019

YOKE THE SALON has made it through WITH 3 TEAMS to the first round and into the semi-finals of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award 2019.

This means that we will now go head to head with salons at the Western Regional Semi-Final event on Sunday 7th April at Cheltenham. The Western region covers from below Birmingham all the way down to the bottom of wales and Cornwall, putting us up against some of the most prestigious salons in the UK.

During the first round, hundreds of photographic images from across the country were judged by the most influential names in hairdressing, including British Hairdresser of the Year, Sally Brooks, Charlotte Mensah and Jamie Stevens as well as hairdressing icons Errol Douglas MBE and Charles Worthington MBE. YOKE fought off stiff competition and were successfully chosen to go through to the next round of the competition – the Regional Semi- Finals.

The next stage of the competition will put the team through their paces as they now look to create a truly inspirational, contemporary colour, complemented by trend-driven styling and finish. The team of judges will be looking for work that is exceptionally executed and technically precise.

At each Regional Semi-Final, six successful teams will be announced, two of which are guaranteed to compete at the prestigious L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final in June, as well announcing who is to be taken forward to the Shortlisted Judging Stage. The L’Oréal Colour Trophy Semi-finalists are in for a chance to win the unparalleled Grand Final prize of national media exposure, a European trip to shoot their winning look and an exclusive feature with a top consumer title!

YOKE has 2 teams through for the Colour Trophy Award and 1 team through for the Mens Image Award - please check out our entries below….

L'OREAL ID ARTIST

Last Wednesday James and I headed up to Cheltenham to audition for the prestigious L'Oreal ID Artist positions in the Midlands and the South West. The audition consisted of us both entering either as a stylist (James) and a colour technician (Jo) and presenting a mood board and a model that represented a trend or idea that we had selected.

After much planning and deliberation (and leaving YOKE with 2 completed models & buckets of coffee at 7am)  we got to the Hotel Du Vin in Cheltenham for our 11am slots with the judges. The audition consisted of a skills test, in which we had 4 minutes to complete sectioning patterns or simple hair ups and then time in front of the judges to present our models with their completed looks. During this time we had to talk through our idea and how it corresponded with our models complete look as well as our technical explanation for what we did. After a pretty nerve- wracking audition we were then asked some questions by the lovely judges and then they had to give us an X Factor style judging of a ‘YES’ or a ‘NO’ each.

James went first and he auditioned as a stylist with his model Sophie and the theme ‘Water’. After 10 minutes he came out completely buzzing after receiving some amazing feedback and getting his 3 Yes’ which meant his was through to the next round!

My turn came straight after and I presented my model - another Sophie, with my theme of 70’s Opulence. I also managed to get the 3 ‘yes’ and my chance to be considered for the next round!

So we packed up and headed for lunch on our way back down to Plymouth totally thrilled for having the opportunity to audition and with the knowledge that we were both through to the next round.

The next round involved the judges selecting 1 colour technician and 1 stylist from the hairdressers that receive the 3  yes’ throughout the day, so now we had to wait the agonising 3 days to find out if we had won the places.

On Friday afternoon I received a call from L’Oreal saying that James had been absolutely amazing and that they couldn’t believe how well he had done on his first audition for anything like this and although unsuccessful this year how much they wanted to see him back next year… They then went onto say that I had been awarded the place as Colour Technician for the Midlands and the whole of the South West!!!

As such a new salon this opportunity is so huge and it’s a bit difficult to explain how much of a big deal this is for YOKE, so i’ve popped some information below about what it means to be an ID Artist…

The ID Artist programme from L’Oréal Professionnel has one goal - to find talented individuals who could be the future stars of the hairdressing industry and work with them to further develop their talent and discover their full potential.

Launched 15 years ago and always being inspired by fashion, L’Oréal Professionnel has helped to develop hundreds of individuals and it is proven that being an ID Artist has helped propel careers. As an ID Artist Jo will be developed and mentored through world-class education from some of the leading names in the hairdressing industry.

As part of a 2 year programme as a n ID artist Jo will attend numerous inspirational education sessions and unique hairdressing opportunities which includes the latest cut, session and colour techniques from some of the best in the industry. Jo will also receive insight into seasonal collections, product previews and the chance to be involved in some huge events.

The ID Artist alumni consists of some of the biggest hairdressers in the world including the infamous Sophie Hilton from Not Another Salon...“The ID Artist programme was my entry to the industry. There are times when you just don’t know where to turn to get the career you want. ID Artist moulds you, educates you and allows you to start a new life”

'Cause we're worth it... Why L'Oreal?

So we have been asked the question "why L'Oreal" on quite a few occasions now - so I thought I'd give you a little run down on why we choose to be a L'Oreal salon, over any other Professional Salon colour range on the market....

Whilst on our travels and throughout our numerous years(!!) of working within the industry, Steve and I have used nearly every single professional colour ranges on the market .. HOWEVER we have always believed that L'Oreal was the absolute best and always blew us away with the results.

When we first started planning YOKE we dreamed about being a L'Oreal salon and knew that we just had to have it. The results speak for themselves and the condition that hair is left in - post colour service is way better than we have seen with any other brand..

Quite simply, L’Oréal Professional combines advanced research and professional expertise to create beautiful hair, whilst leaving it in the best possible condition.  The brands heritage spans back to 1907. A French chemist named Eugéne Schueller created a hair colour formula which totally revolutionized the hairdressing world!

L'Oreal works passionately to create innovative and exciting products and actually only bring out a new line when it has been rigorously tested and they are 100% confident in it - which is why they don't have 100's of ranges that are here one minute and discontinued the next.

Although at YOKE we are striving to be as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible, after so much thought, research and testing we knew it would be a toss up between choosing a organic brand free of nasties that wasn't always guaranteed to deliver results and condition: over a product we 100% believed would create the best colours possible leaving the hair in its BEST condition.

ALSO contrary to some heavy duty marketing and PR the majority of these 'organic and natural brands' actually aren't 100% of either.

Lastly - this is another topic for yet another blog but just so you know L'Oreal DO NOT TEST ON ANIMALS. If you want to read more about this please click here.

Ohh, I nearly forgot the goss - this year L'Oreal are about to release 2 VERY EXCITING new ranges - I'm not gonna give it all away yet,but lets just say one will be doing its bit to help lose the need for single use plastic and the other is about to smash all the so called 'natural' professional colours out the park.

So if you're still with me, enjoy the beautiful L'Oreal images below and the not so beaut cracker of me and my bestie Bex, picking up our L'Oreal Colour specialist Diplomas in Sydney last year.

Surreal Magazine - Published work

In Feb James and I worked on a shoot with Emma, which literally must have been the coldest shoot ever (-11 wind chill and freezing rain).

As you can see from below, the images completely made up for the numb hands and feet and having to hug Molly (MUA and model) to keep her warm between shots.

The ethereal images have been published in  Surreal Magazine

Welcome to YOKE

As YOKE has now been open for just over a week we thought we should share a little about us…

Established with an ethical sustainable, eco-sensitive ethos in mind, YOKE will not only provide the highest standards of hair styling and care but will also look to minimise it’s environmental impact with a series of initiatives designed to reduce water use, source eco-friendly products and minimise the use of harmful chemicals wherever possible, and lower energy usage - all whilst giving clients cutting edge styling and the very best treatments in a fresh, stylish new salon.

Nestled amoungst the Yard's thriving business community - situated between Le Bistrot Pierre and Le Vignoble -  YOKE enjoys an enviable position in one of the most sought after areas of the city. New owners and salon partners Jo Barker and Steven Dyer said,

“We love this site - it’s a wonderful place to work and we really can’t wait to get the doors open. The plans for YOKE have been under wraps for a long time and we’re really excited to be able to launch our brand to the public.”

Steven continued, “Between us, we have over 30 years of experience in the hairdressing industry, in some of the UK’s most exclusive salons. We have both worked as stylists and top-level colourists, as well as doing on-set hair and make-up for magazine editorials and managing other salons. We are very excited to now be able to pass our experience on to our wonderful team, and we look forward to welcoming our clients - both old and new - into the salon.”

Working exclusively with haircare experts L’Oreal, YOKE will look to bring some of the global brand’s expertise to the South West. Jo Barker, head colourist and salon partner said, “We have both worked in some of the UK’s very best salons, as well as spending two years living and working in Sydney, Australia. Many of the salons in Australia are way ahead of UK salons in terms of being more eco-friendly and sustainable, and we want to be amongst the first to bring this to the UK.”

Jo, who holds the highly sought after L’Oreal Colour Specialist qualification, which you won’t find at any other independent salons in the city, continued. “At YOKE we are looking forward to teaming up with more of the South West’s independent businesses to run exciting events, all with a focus on lessening our impact on the environment and creating beautiful, stylish hair in a salon environment that our clients can relax in.”

A super massive THANKS to all of our inspiring and awesome team and all our Family and Friends that have helped us realise and start building our dream!

Jo & Steve x
